I am writing to strongly support the application of Maria Blanco for the Citizens Redistricting Commission. She brings a wealth of relevant voting rights knowledge and skills, she has enormous stature as a leader in the civil rights community, and she brings a deep appreciation for the diversity that makes California the great state that we are. Whether in her current position as the Executive Director of the Warren Institute at UC Berkeley, or her previous positions of leadership in major civil rights organizations, Ms. Blanco is well respected because she brings personal integrity and a consensus-building approach to her work. The Citizens Redistricting Commission would be well served by Ms. Blanco because she would not only help it to “hit the ground running” but she would also instill a strong commitment to transparency and public involvement.
